HK$50 billion boost into innovation and technology
Hong Kong's technology sector is one of the big winners in this year's annual budget with an additional investment of HK$50 billion allotted to developing innovations in the areas of biotechnology, AI, and fin-tech.
Paul Chan Mo-po, Hong Kong Financial Secretary, noted new technologies promote business start-ups and enable new ideas, innovative products and services that benefit the economy. Chan said Hong Kong must optimize its resources by focusing on developing its strong points, namely biotechnology, artificial intelligence, a smart city, and fin-tech.
The additional HK$50 billion earmarked for the city's technology sector is investment in Hong Kong's long-term economic growth, and it is four times as much as the HK$10 billion allocated for ICT investment in the 2017 budget.
Of this HK$50 billion, HK$20 billion will go towards the first phase of the Hong Kong – Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in Lok Ma Chau, HK$10 billion into the Innovation and Technology Fund supporting R&D in Hong Kong, HK$10 billion to support establish two Research Centres on healthcare technologies, AI and robotics and HK$10 billion will be allocated to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.

Career expectations evolve
The HKFYG youth research centre revealed interesting findings on recent changes to working practices and hours in Hong Kong.
In their survey covering more than 500 working youths aged 15-34, over 50% of respondents said they were flexi-workers.
Despite the unstable income and insufficient labour protection of part time work, these workers said they enjoyed having greater control over their working hours and the flexibility to choose high paying part-time jobs.
