Asia graduate salary expectations movement in 2017
According to the latest global research, Malaysia’s graduates have one of the lowest salary expectations in the Asia-Pacific region, with business graduates expecting between MYR$35,000 - $40,000 per annum, and engineering graduates expecting MYR$35,000 – 45,000 per annum. The lowest starting salary expectation came from Vietnam, with engineering and business graduates asking between USD$6,000 - $7,500 per annum.

Asia-Pacific’s higher salary expectations come from Singapore and Hong Kong graduates, where business graduates expect to be paid in the range of SG$42,000 annually, and engineering graduates expecting SG$45,000 annually. As expected, Hong Kong (Singapore’s closest competitor to Asia’s financial hub) did not fall far behind, where graduates' salary expectations are concerned. Coming up right after Singapore, business graduates in Hong Kong expect an annual salary of HK$210,000, while their engineering counterparts expected HK$240,000.

According to a recent research on nominal wage growth, a majority of the Asia-Pacific’s emerging economies are forecasting higher salary increase percentages for 2017, with projection rise particularly bullish in India (10.8%) and Vietnam (9.2%). Financial hubs, Hong Kong and Singapore have forecasted a 4% and 6% increase respectively. Japan has forecasted to receive the lowest increase of 2.2%, followed by New Zealand (2.8%) and Australia (2.9%). Notably though, real wage growth (salary increase minus inflation rate) has also been steadily rising in the region, given that inflation is at its lowest for most countries. The strongest push in forecast is likely to come from the life sciences and chemical sectors.
