Expat pay packages on the rise in China
Expat Pay Packages on the Rise in China
There has been a significant slowdown in Gross Domestic Product growth in Mainland China over the past few years. However China remains attractive for foreigners due to its compensation packages. Based on the survey conducted by Employment Conditions Abroad Limited (ECA) International 2015, China has further improved its expatriate packages, making China more attractive than Hong Kong in the Asia-Pacific region regarding the salary range. The average expatriate package in tier-1 cities including Beijing and Shanghai adds up to USD 276,000 per annum.

HSBC’s Expat Explorer Survey conducted in 2014 indicates the same salary trend. By taking into consideration quality of life, financial wellbeing, and the career progression ladder, China comes 3rd on the list behind Switzerland and Singapore. The survey highlights that China is the host country of the highest earning expats in Asia. In Mainland China 25% of the expat population’s annual salary exceeds USD 300,000. However the figures are not that rosy if other factors such as experience, economics and ease of raising a family abroad are taken into consideration. All these variables mentioned above pulls down the overall ranking of China to 27 out of 100 countries for 2015.

The largest networking portal for expats (Internations) also conducted a survey on Top Working Destinations worldwide. Their survey showed that three quarters of the expats were satisfied with their remuneration in People's Republic of China. Furthermore, 90% of the foreign population has more disposable income in China then they used to have at home.

It’s needless to say that the three most important factors that determine the salary structure are the skill set possessed by expats, the industry benchmark and Chinese language skill. According to HSBC’s survey, 1 out of 6 foreigners in China and also in other developing countries are being employed in the field of education. However expats take on positions in a wide array of fields such as banking and financial services, sales and marketing, human resources, advertising and communications, manufacturing and industry, health sciences and information technology.

The last factor that HSBC takes into consideration is the culture. Half of the expat population in China tend to remain within the expat community and only 25% socialise more frequently with locals. As a result of that, China came 56 out of 64 on the “livability index”. Foreigners find Chinese people really friendly, but due to language and cultural barriers only one-third of the expats can get on well with locals according to the
Employment Conditions Abroad Limited (ECA) report.
