CHINA

A yawning gulf between new grad

salary expectations and reality

A recent survey published by the classified advertising website Ganji.com regarding fresh graduates' expectations shows that the average monthly pay of 2018 college graduates in China is RMB 5,429 (US$ 828), much lower than the RMB 6,174 average that graduates expect.

The survey showed that forty (40) percent of new graduates expect to earn RMB 8,000 per month, while 9.5 percent of them expect a monthly salary of over RMB 10,000. While actually, 80 percent of them earn less than RMB 8,000 a month.

More than half of graduates take salary and workload as their priorities in choosing a career, said the survey. Male job seekers mainly focus on wages, working intensity and hours, while their female competitors are more concerned about training and mentoring as well as the match between job requirements and their abilities.

The service industry, including catering, marketing and customer service, demands the largest number of graduates. South China's Shenzhen provides the highest monthly salary in catering, which stands at RMB 6,623 on average, followed by Shanghai and East China's Suzhou with RMB 6,431 and RMB 5,998 respectively.

In marketing, the eastern city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province hires the largest number of graduates and offers the highest salary of RMB 8,074, while customer service personnel are in greatest demand in Ji'nan, East China's Shandong province with a significantly higher salary of RMB 6,591 than in other cities.

As for working location, opportunity and development are the major concerns of fresh graduates seeking jobs. The survey shows that 42 percent of graduates choose to work in their hometown to enjoy a better social life, interpersonal connections, job opportunities and quality of life. Another 58 percent prefer jobs in other provinces for plenty of job offers and broader space for development.

Permanent residence made easier for expats

Shanghai streamlined the procedures recently for highly skilled foreigners working in the city to get their residence permits within three working days through an online application, the city's latest measure to attract such overseas workers.

High-level professionals identified by national or Shanghai authorities who manage human resources or foreign experts affairs will only need to go to crj.police.sh.cn and submit documents, according to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau. They can retrieve their permits at exit-entry offices after three working days.

"High-end professionals employed by the 8,818 enterprises on a list seen as key leaders in Shanghai's quest to become a global technological innovation hub by 2030 will also become beneficiaries of the new measure," said Xin Wenke of the information office of the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau.

The enterprises include high-tech and new technology companies or those

in financial and strategic emerging fields, regional headquarters of multinational companies, and research and development centers that include foreign investment.

The initiative in Shanghai, the first and the only one in the country, simplifies application procedures and assists the establishment of a talent system that is globally competitive, the spokesman said.

Before the measure was unveiled, applicants had to visit exit-entry offices and go through the formalities in person. The offices sometimes required interviews or supplementary materials. The procedure from start to finish typically took seven working days.

Measures were unveiled in Shanghai in 2015 aimed at attracting talented people from overseas. In January of this year, application requirements for permanent residency were further eased for the core foreign members of top scientific research teams and outstanding foreign university graduates who had worked in the city for three straight years.
